Minisforum N5 Pro vs NIMO Nexus Pro

Updated

Which should you buy?

Choose the NIMO Nexus Pro if you want to fit a full-size graphics card inside the case: it has a PCIe x16 slot, an 800W supply and RTX bundles. Choose the Minisforum N5 Pro for a smaller, cheaper box with a stronger 50 TOPS NPU, five bays and an OCuLink port for an external GPU later.

What is the difference between the N5 Pro and the Nexus Pro?

Both systems take up to 96GB of DDR5, so on memory alone they hold the same model sizes. The difference is how they get to GPU speed.

The NIMO Nexus Pro is built around a graphics card. Its PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (wired at x8) takes cards up to 330mm long, the 800W supply reserves 400W for the GPU, and NIMO sells it with RTX 5060, 5070 or 5080 cards fitted. The base platform is a Ryzen 7 PRO 8845HS with eight cores, Radeon 780M graphics and a 16 TOPS NPU, with four bays and two 10GbE ports.

The N5 Pro relies on its processor first: a 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 with Radeon 890M graphics and a 50 TOPS NPU. It has five bays and three M.2 slots, 10GbE plus 5GbE, and two GPU routes, OCuLink for an external dock and a PCIe x16 slot wired at x4 for low-profile cards.

With a discrete GPU fitted, the NIMO will answer far faster on any model that fits in the card's memory. Without one, the N5 Pro's CPU and graphics are the stronger pair. Consider UK support too: Minisforum runs a UK store, NIMO sells mainly from the US.

Choose the Minisforum N5 Pro if

You want strong local AI from the processor alone, plus the option of an external GPU dock later. You prefer a compact case, five bays, a UK store and a lower starting price, and you are happy to fit your own memory.

Choose the NIMO Nexus Pro if

You want GPU-speed inference inside one box and are ready to fit or buy a full-size NVIDIA card. Faster replies on 8B to 32B models, or several users at once, matter more to you than size, power draw or a UK-based seller.

Which can run bigger local models?

Both top out at 96GB of memory, so on paper they hold the same model sizes: 70B class models at 4-bit with room left for longer context (Estimated). The difference is speed, which depends on the processor, graphics and memory bandwidth rather than capacity.

For GPU acceleration, the Minisforum N5 Pro offers oculink (external gpu), while the NIMO Nexus Pro offers full-size gpu. A discrete card with its own memory is the biggest single speed upgrade for local models, so this matters more than CPU cores for anyone planning to run 14B models or larger.

The Minisforum N5 Pro has a 50 TOPS NPU; The NIMO Nexus Pro has a 16 TOPS NPU. NAS NPUs help vendor features such as photo recognition and search, but most open-source LLM runtimes do not use them yet.
