Synology DS1825+ vs UGREEN DXP8800 Plus
Updated
Which should you buy?
For running local AI tools the UGREEN DXP8800 Plus is the stronger eight-bay NAS: a ten-core Core i5 with integrated graphics, up to 64GB of memory and two 10GbE ports built in. The Synology DS1825+ wins on DSM's backup software, ECC memory and expansion to 18 drives.
What is the difference between the DS1825+ and the DXP8800 Plus?
Both are eight-bay desktop NAS systems with two M.2 slots, aimed at people with a lot to store. Their AI ability differs more than their bay count suggests.
The DXP8800 Plus uses a ten-core Core i5-1235U with Iris Xe graphics, 8GB of DDR5 expandable to 64GB, two 10GbE ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a half-height PCIe Gen4 x4 slot. There is no NPU and UGREEN's Uliya assistant is reserved for iDX models, but UGREEN documents Ollama and Open WebUI in Docker.
The DS1825+ uses a quad-core Ryzen V1500B with no integrated graphics or NPU, 8GB of ECC memory expandable to 32GB, two 2.5GbE ports and a PCIe slot that Synology supports for 10GbE and 25GbE network cards only. Two expansion ports take it to 18 drives.
For models, the UGREEN's extra cores and double memory ceiling allow 14B to 32B class models to run (Estimated); the Synology suits small models slowly. For backup, sharing and long-term reliability, many buyers still choose DSM.
Networking is the other clear split. The UGREEN has two 10GbE ports out of the box; the Synology needs an add-in card in its only PCIe slot to go beyond 2.5GbE. If you edit video from the NAS or move large model files around, that difference shows up every day.
Choose the Synology DS1825+ if
Your priority is storing and protecting a large amount of data with DSM, ECC memory and the option to grow to 18 drives. AI will run on another machine, connected through Synology AI Console, and you are happy to add a 10GbE card later if you need it.
Choose the UGREEN DXP8800 Plus if
You want eight bays and dual 10GbE in the box, with enough CPU and memory headroom to run Ollama, Open WebUI and a RAG stack on the NAS itself. Thunderbolt 4 for direct editing and memory upgrades to 64GB make it the more flexible box for a home lab.

Which can run bigger local models?
The UGREEN DXP8800 Plus reaches 64GB of memory against 32GB on the Synology DS1825+. That is the difference between 32B class models comfortably, and 70B class models at 4-bit with little headroom and models up to the 14B class, with 32B class models a tight fit (Estimated). The largest 4-bit model each can hold is roughly 93B and 40B parameters, after leaving 8GB for the operating system.
For GPU acceleration, the Synology DS1825+ has no way to add a graphics card, while the UGREEN DXP8800 Plus offers pcie x4 slot. A discrete card with its own memory is the biggest single speed upgrade for local models, so this matters more than CPU cores for anyone planning to run 14B models or larger.
