Can the ASUSTOR Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) run local AI?
The ASUSTOR Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) can run small local models, with limits. Its AMD Ryzen Embedded V3C14 and 64GB memory ceiling suit 32B class models comfortably, and 70B class models at 4-bit with little headroom (Estimated), so treat it as a storage-first NAS that can host light AI tools.
There is no way to add a discrete GPU, so all inference runs on the CPU.
Local LLM support is documented by the manufacturer.
The Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 is an all-flash NAS with twelve M.2 slots, two 10GbE ports and two USB4 ports in a compact case. It is built for fast storage, and for AI we class it as AI Capable after checking the hardware: the Ryzen Embedded V3C14 has four cores, no integrated graphics and no NPU, and there is no slot for a graphics card.
ASUSTOR does support local AI tools officially. App Central lists Ollama with Open WebUI for this model, and ADM 5.1 adds on-device face recognition in Photo Gallery. ASUSTOR's own RAG guidance recommends running inference on a separate GPU machine, which tells you how it sees the role of this NAS: the fast, private document store behind your AI, not the model server.
Memory is ECC DDR5 up to 64GB, which is plenty for an embedding model and a small assistant. Buy it as flash storage for editing or a fast RAG library, and run larger models elsewhere.

| Capability | Supported | Evidence | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local LLM | Limited | Vendor confirmed | ASUSTOR App Central lists Ollama + Open WebUI for FS68 series (ADM 5.0+). CPU-only inference on a 4-core V3C14 with no GPU; ASUSTOR's RAG page recommends an external GPU host for inference. |
| Ollama | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Ollama + Open WebUI app (v0.11.4.r01) lists FS68 series as supported; installs via Docker. |
| Open WebUI | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Bundled with the Ollama + Open WebUI App Central package. |
| RAG | Limited | Vendor confirmed | ASUSTOR markets NAS as RAG knowledge base storage with vector DBs (Chroma, pgvector, Weaviate) via Docker; Open WebUI app includes RAG. Inference recommended on external compute. |
| AI search | No | Unverified | No AI or semantic search feature found in ADM 5.1 material. |
| GPU expansion | No | Vendor confirmed | No PCIe expansion slot listed on spec page; no integrated GPU. ASUSTOR states its NAS models do not feature a discrete GPU. |
| Hardware acceleration | No | Community confirmed | Ryzen Embedded V3C14 has no integrated graphics (NASCompares, CNX Software); spec page lists multimedia output N/A. No NPU. |
| AI photos | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Photo Gallery 4.2 (ADM 5.1.1+) supports FS68 series; ADM 5.1 adds facial recognition grouping powered by locally run AI. |
| AI video | No | Unverified | No AI video feature found in ADM documentation. |
| Surveillance AI | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Surveillance Center 2.8.4 and Surveillance Center 3 list FS68 series as supported. |
The Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) ships with 16GB of DDR5-4800 ECC SO-DIMM and supports up to 64GB with ECC. Upgrading to the maximum lifts the model ceiling from 7B to 8B class models to 32B class models comfortably, and 70B class models at 4-bit with little headroom (both Estimated).
As a rule of thumb, a 4-bit model needs about 0.6GB per billion parameters plus room for context. After leaving around 8GB for the NAS operating system, 64GB leaves space for a model of roughly 93B parameters at most (Estimated).
ECC memory support is a plus for always-on systems that also hold important files.
No. The Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) has no PCIe slot or OCuLink port for a graphics card, and eGPU use over USB4 or Thunderbolt is not a supported NAS setup. Inference runs on the CPU, so keep to small models.
With limits. The Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) can host a small RAG stack such as AnythingLLM or Open WebUI with a compact embedding model, but memory and compute restrict how large the answering model can be. It suits a personal document library more than a team knowledge base.
Networking is 2 x 10GbE. That is ample for indexing large libraries and for several people querying at once.

The Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) scores best for Home Lab (50/100) and Business (49/100). It suits home lab owners who want one box for storage, containers, media and a few AI services.
It is a weaker fit for buyers who expect to add a graphics card later.
