Can the QNAP TS-264 run local AI?
Only lightly. Expect 7B to 8B class models (Estimated) on the QNAP TS-264: Intel Celeron N5095 does the work with up to 16GB of memory, which is fine for experiments rather than a daily assistant.
Without any GPU option, the processor carries the whole inference load.
Local LLM support is documented by the manufacturer.
The TS-264 is the two-bay version of the TS-464, with the same Celeron N5095, 8GB of memory expandable to 16GB, two M.2 slots and two 2.5GbE ports. The AI verdict is the same: a capable home NAS that can run tiny language models, but not one you would buy for that.
QNAP's guidance for Ollama on this class of hardware is 3B models at 8GB, and the 16GB ceiling plus a four-core Celeron means even a 7B model will be slow. There is no GPU path. The PCIe Gen3 x2 slot is there for a faster network card.
Its strengths are the QNAP software stack. QuMagie organises photos with local face and object recognition, Qsirch indexes documents, and the surveillance apps run well for a few cameras. It suits a small household or home office with modest storage needs. If you think you will grow into AI, spend more now on a system with a higher memory ceiling.

Plan on upgrading. 8GB is fitted as standard, while the TS-264 accepts 16GB of DDR4 SODIMM, which is the difference between small models up to around 7B parameters and 7B to 8B class models (Estimated).
Our estimate for the biggest model that fits in 16GB is about 13B parameters at 4-bit, after setting aside 8GB for the system. Long context windows reduce that figure (Estimated).
A graphics card is not an option on the TS-264, which has neither a PCIe slot nor OCuLink. Inference runs on the CPU, with Intel UHD Graphics handling media tasks, so keep to small models.
As the storage half of a RAG setup it works well; as the model host it is limited. Small embedding models run fine on the TS-264, while the answering model needs more compute than it has.
The manufacturer also provides AI search across your files (documented by the manufacturer), which covers simple document questions without setting up your own stack.
For network access it has 2 x 2.5GbE. Enough for light use; large imports will take a while.

Best fit: small offices that need shared storage with private AI tools and room to grow. That is where the TS-264 scores highest (Business 34/100), followed by Home Lab (33/100).
Less suited to anyone who wants to run models larger than about 8B parameters and buyers who expect to add a graphics card later.
