Can the Synology DS725+ run local AI?
The Synology DS725+ can run small local models, with limits. Its AMD Ryzen R1600 and 32GB memory ceiling suit models up to the 14B class, with 32B class models a tight fit (Estimated), so treat it as a storage-first NAS that can host light AI tools.
There is no way to add a discrete GPU, so all inference runs on the CPU.
Local LLM support is confirmed by community reports.
The DS725+ is Synology's compact two-bay Plus model, and it is the most limited of the 2025 Plus range for AI. The Ryzen R1600 has only two cores, no integrated graphics and no NPU. It ships with 4GB of ECC memory and accepts up to 32GB.
That memory ceiling is generous for a two-bay box, so a small model in Container Manager is possible, but two cores make inference slow. Community guides show Ollama working on this platform for 1B to 3B models; treat anything larger as an experiment.
What it does well is quiet storage for a home or a small office: Synology Photos with on-device recognition, Drive, backup and a 2.5GbE port alongside 1GbE. There is no 10GbE option and no expansion slot. If you want a Synology and may want local AI later, the four-bay or larger models offer more cores; better still, plan on a separate machine for inference.

| Capability | Supported | Evidence | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local LLM | Limited | Community confirmed | CPU-only Ollama via Container Manager; 2-core R1600 suits only small (1B to 3B) models. Needs RAM upgrade beyond 4 GB base. |
| Ollama | Yes | Community confirmed | Not in Package Center; ollama/ollama container runs in Container Manager on DSM (CPU only). |
| Open WebUI | Yes | Community confirmed | Open WebUI container documented on Synology DSM pointing at Ollama on port 11434. |
| RAG | Limited | Unverified | No Synology local RAG for this model; Open WebUI document chat plausible via Docker but not verified on this unit. AI Console only bridges to cloud or OpenAI-compatible APIs. |
| AI search | No | Vendor confirmed | Synology AI Search in Drive uses GPU-powered embedding/OCR models only on supported systems with a GPU (FS/26-series list); this model is not listed. |
| GPU expansion | No | Vendor confirmed | No PCIe slot usable for a GPU; no OCuLink or USB4. |
| Hardware acceleration | No | Community confirmed | Ryzen R1600 has no integrated GPU and no NPU; no hardware transcoding or AI acceleration. |
| AI photos | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Synology Photos facial recognition and object recognition listed in product spec (on-device, CPU). |
| AI video | Limited | Community confirmed | No on-NAS deep video analytics (DVA models only); Surveillance Station can use edge AI from Synology BC500/TC500 cameras. |
| Surveillance AI | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Surveillance Station supported, up to 40 IP cameras (1080p H.264); 2 free licences, more require purchase. |
The DS725+ ships with 4GB of DDR4 ECC SODIMM and supports up to 32GB with ECC. Upgrading to the maximum lifts the model ceiling from only very small models of around 1B to 3B parameters to models up to the 14B class, with 32B class models a tight fit (both Estimated).
As a rule of thumb, a 4-bit model needs about 0.6GB per billion parameters plus room for context. After leaving around 8GB for the NAS operating system, 32GB leaves space for a model of roughly 40B parameters at most (Estimated).
ECC support protects against silent memory errors on a box that runs around the clock.
No. The DS725+ has no PCIe slot or OCuLink port for a graphics card. Inference runs on the CPU, so keep to small models.
With limits. The DS725+ can host a small RAG stack such as AnythingLLM or Open WebUI with a compact embedding model, but memory and compute restrict how large the answering model can be. It suits a personal document library more than a team knowledge base.
Networking is 2.5GbE + 1GbE. Fine for one or two users; indexing a large archive over the network will be slower.
| Configuration | RAM | SSD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DS725+ 4GB ECC | 4GB | None | 4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM (1x 4 GB), 2 slots, max 32 GB |
| DS725neo+ 4GB non-ECC | 4GB | None | Variant on same spec page with 4 GB DDR4 non-ECC SODIMM |
The closest Synology model by AINAS Score. Only the specifications that differ are listed.
The DS725+ scores best for Business (29/100) and RAG (28/100). It suits small offices that need shared storage with private AI tools and room to grow.
It is a weaker fit for buyers who expect to add a graphics card later and for teams moving large files over the network every day.
