AI NAS vs traditional NAS: do you need an AI NAS?

Updated

AI NAS vs Traditional NAS

You need an AI NAS if you want to run language models, private document search or advanced media AI on your own hardware. If you only need backups, file sharing and photo storage, a traditional NAS does the job for less money and power.

Which AI NAS systems show the difference best?

12 systems qualify; the top 6 are shown. The order comes from the overall AINAS Score and live prices, and updates as prices change.

What is the actual difference?

A traditional NAS is built to store and serve files: a low-power processor, a small amount of memory and software for backups, sharing and media. Many now include basic photo recognition. An AI NAS adds the hardware to run AI models locally: a modern processor with stronger graphics, often an NPU, memory ceilings of 64GB or more, and in many cases a way to add a graphics card.

What can an AI NAS do that a traditional one cannot?

Run a private chat assistant without sending anything to the cloud. Answer questions about your own documents. Search files by meaning rather than by name. Transcribe recordings. Run image models for creative work. All of these need memory and compute that traditional NAS units do not have.

When is a traditional NAS the better buy?

When storage is the job. A traditional NAS costs less, draws less power and still sorts your photos by faces on the device. If you want AI later, you can run models on a separate machine and keep the NAS for files. The traditional systems we track are listed below for comparison.

Common questions

Can I upgrade a traditional NAS into an AI NAS?

Usually not. Processors are soldered and memory ceilings are low. A few mid-range models accept more memory and run small models through Docker; those are classed AI Capable.

Is an AI NAS harder to manage?

No. The storage side works the same way. The AI features are extra apps on top.

How did we rank these?

The six highest-scoring AI NAS systems (Native AI NAS and AI Ready), shown against the traditional NAS models we track. The score uses the AINAS Score profile of the AINAS Score: each system gets six component scores from documented rules, weighted as shown. Prices come from Amazon UK and are never more than 24 hours old when used; commission plays no part.
