Can the TerraMaster F4-212 run local AI?
The TerraMaster F4-212 is a Traditional NAS built for file storage and backup rather than local AI. With Realtek RTD1619B and a 2GB memory ceiling, it can run light services but not a useful local language model.
We list it so you can compare it with AI-capable systems at a similar price.
The F4-212 is TerraMaster's entry four-bay NAS, built on a quad-core Realtek ARM chip with 2GB of fixed memory and a single 1GbE port. We list it as a Traditional NAS for comparison only.
It cannot run local language models. There is not enough memory, the ARM build of TOS 7 does not support TerraMaster's AI features according to TerraMaster's own release notes, and a recent review found Docker tools missing on the ARM version. Photo management is available, but we could not confirm AI recognition on this build.
What it offers is four bays at a low price for simple file storage and backups. That is a fair job for it. If you came here looking for an AI NAS, this is the wrong product, and the gap to the next step up is large: the F4-424 Pro gives you an x86 CPU, 32GB of memory and documented Ollama support.

| Capability | Supported | Evidence | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local LLM | No | Unverified | 2GB non-upgradeable RAM on a 1.7GHz ARM Cortex-A55; no LLM tooling available. |
| Ollama | No | Unverified | Docker availability on TOS 7 ARM is doubtful; review advises against Docker use on this model. |
| Open WebUI | No | Unverified | Same as Ollama; not practical with 2GB RAM. |
| RAG | No | Unverified | No RAG tooling; limited ARM app catalog. |
| AI search | No | Unverified | Search results quote the TerraMaster TOS 7 ARM release post as saying ARM builds do not support AI features; forum page blocked (403) so not fetched. |
| GPU expansion | No | Vendor confirmed | No PCIe slot or high-speed external port. |
| Hardware acceleration | Limited | Vendor confirmed | Product page cites 4K hardware decoding and video DSP; spec table lists no hardware transcoding engine. No NPU. |
| AI photos | Limited | Unverified | Terra Photos listed in applications table; whether AI face/scene recognition works on TOS 7 ARM not confirmed. |
| AI video | No | Unverified | No AI video features. |
| Surveillance AI | No | Community confirmed | Review states Surveillance Manager is not available on TOS 7 ARM. |
The F4-212 ships with 2GB of DDR4 that cannot be upgraded, so the configuration you buy is the one you keep. For local AI that matters more than anything else on the spec sheet: model size is capped by memory, not storage.
No. The F4-212 has no PCIe slot or OCuLink port for a graphics card. Inference runs on the CPU, so keep to small models.
Not well. A useful private RAG setup needs more memory or compute than the F4-212 offers.
Networking is 1GbE. Fine for one or two users; indexing a large archive over the network will be slower.
| Configuration | RAM | SSD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2GB | 2GB | None | Single configuration, diskless |

The F4-212 scores best for Business (16/100) and Home Lab (15/100). It suits small offices that need shared storage with private AI tools and room to grow.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants to run models larger than about 8B parameters and for buyers who expect to add a graphics card later.
