Why add a GPU to a NAS?
Speed. A language model running on a graphics card uses the card's own fast memory, which can be several times quicker than the NAS's system memory. A GPU also lets the NAS answer several people at once and makes image generation practical. For anyone running 14B models or larger every day, it is the most effective upgrade available.

How much GPU memory do you need?
Match it to your models. A 12GB to 16GB card runs 8B to 14B class models fully on the GPU; 24GB covers 32B class models at 4-bit (Estimated). When a model is larger than the card, runtimes such as Ollama split it between GPU and system memory, which works but loses much of the speed gain.
Common questions
Can any NAS use a USB or Thunderbolt eGPU?
Rarely in a supported way. Thunderbolt eGPUs work on some UGREEN models, but most NAS operating systems do not support them. OCuLink is the dependable external option.
Does a GPU help photo recognition?
Yes on QNAP and some others, but photo features already run well on integrated graphics and NPUs. Buy a GPU for language models and image generation.
