Can the Minisforum N5 run local AI?
The Minisforum N5 can run small local models, with limits. Its AMD Ryzen 7 255 and 96GB memory ceiling suit 70B class models at 4-bit with room left for longer context (Estimated), so treat it as a storage-first NAS that can host light AI tools.
It also has a GPU path (OCuLink (external GPU)), so a graphics card can be added later for much faster inference.
Local LLM support is not yet verified.
The N5 is the non-Pro version of Minisforum's five-bay NAS, with the same chassis, the same OCuLink port and PCIe slot, the same 10GbE and 5GbE networking and the same 96GB memory ceiling. The difference is the processor: a Ryzen 7 255 with eight cores, Radeon 780M graphics and no NPU.
For local AI that is a smaller gap than it sounds. Most open-source runtimes do not use NAS NPUs yet, and the 780M is a capable integrated GPU. With 64GB or 96GB fitted it can hold large models; it will simply answer more slowly than the Pro. Minisforum does not document a local assistant for it, so expect to set up Ollama yourself.
The N5 was sold out on Minisforum's own stores when we checked and is not listed in the UK store, which now offers the N5 Air. If you find one at a good price it is a strong AI Ready buy. Otherwise, the N5 Pro is the current model.

The N5 can be bought without memory and takes up to 96GB of DDR5 5600 SO-DIMM. Fitting the maximum is what turns it into a serious local AI machine.
As a rule of thumb, a 4-bit model needs about 0.6GB per billion parameters plus room for context. After leaving around 8GB for the NAS operating system, 96GB leaves space for a model of roughly 146B parameters at most (Estimated).
Yes, externally. The N5 has an OCuLink port for an external GPU dock with a direct PCIe link. The dock and its power supply sit outside the case.
With limits. The N5 can host a small RAG stack such as AnythingLLM or Open WebUI with a compact embedding model, but memory and compute restrict how large the answering model can be. It suits a personal document library more than a team knowledge base.
The manufacturer also provides AI search across your files (documented by the manufacturer), which covers simple document questions without setting up your own stack.
Networking is 10GbE + 5GbE. That is ample for indexing large libraries and for several people querying at once.
