Can the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T) run local AI?
Only lightly. Expect 32B class models comfortably, and 70B class models at 4-bit with little headroom (Estimated) on the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T): AMD Ryzen Embedded V3C14 does the work with up to 64GB of memory, which is fine for experiments rather than a daily assistant.
Without any GPU option, the processor carries the whole inference load.
Local LLM support is documented by the manufacturer.
The Lockerstor 8 Gen3 is ASUSTOR's eight-bay desktop NAS on the same Ryzen Embedded V3C14 platform as the Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2. It adds eight hard drive bays to four M.2 slots, and pairs two 10GbE ports with two 5GbE ports, which is a generous network setup for a desktop NAS.
We class it as AI Capable rather than AI Ready. The CPU has four cores and no graphics or NPU, and there is no usable PCIe slot, so there is no way to add a GPU. ASUSTOR lists Ollama and Open WebUI in App Central for the AS68 series, so small models run officially on the CPU, and Photo Gallery does on-device face recognition.
With ECC memory up to 64GB and a 250W power supply driving eight bays, this is a strong storage server for a small business or a large media library. For AI, think of it as the private store for documents and photos that a separate inference machine reads from.

| Capability | Supported | Evidence | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local LLM | Limited | Vendor confirmed | ASUSTOR App Central lists Ollama + Open WebUI for AS68 series (ADM 5.0+). CPU-only inference on a 4-core V3C14 with no GPU; ASUSTOR's RAG page recommends an external GPU host for inference. |
| Ollama | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Ollama + Open WebUI app (v0.11.4.r01) lists AS68 series as supported; installs via Docker. |
| Open WebUI | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Bundled with the Ollama + Open WebUI App Central package. |
| RAG | Limited | Vendor confirmed | ASUSTOR markets NAS as RAG knowledge base storage with vector DBs (Chroma, pgvector, Weaviate) via Docker; Open WebUI app includes RAG. Inference recommended on external compute. |
| AI search | No | Unverified | No AI or semantic search feature found in ADM 5.1 material. |
| GPU expansion | No | Vendor confirmed | No PCIe expansion slot listed on spec page; no integrated GPU. ASUSTOR states its NAS models do not feature a discrete GPU. |
| Hardware acceleration | No | Community confirmed | Ryzen Embedded V3C14 has no integrated graphics (NASCompares, CNX Software); spec page lists multimedia output N/A. No NPU. |
| AI photos | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Photo Gallery 4.2 (ADM 5.1.1+) supports AS68 series; ADM 5.1 adds facial recognition grouping powered by locally run AI. |
| AI video | No | Unverified | No AI video feature found in ADM documentation. |
| Surveillance AI | Yes | Vendor confirmed | Surveillance Center 2.8.4 and Surveillance Center 3 list AS68 series as supported. |
Plan on upgrading. 16GB is fitted as standard, while the Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T) accepts 64GB of DDR5-4800 ECC SO-DIMM, ECC included, which is the difference between 7B to 8B class models and 32B class models comfortably, and 70B class models at 4-bit with little headroom (Estimated).
Our estimate for the biggest model that fits in 64GB is about 93B parameters at 4-bit, after setting aside 8GB for the system. Long context windows reduce that figure (Estimated).
ECC memory support is a plus for always-on systems that also hold important files.
A graphics card is not an option on the Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T), which has neither a PCIe slot nor OCuLink. Inference runs on the CPU, so keep to small models.
As the storage half of a RAG setup it works well; as the model host it is limited. Small embedding models run fine on the Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T), while the answering model needs more compute than it has.
For network access it has 2 x 10GbE + 2 x 5GbE. Fast enough that the network will not be the bottleneck.
| Configuration | RAM | SSD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB | 16GB | None | Diskless; 1x 16GB ECC DDR5-4800 pre-installed, 2 SO-DIMM slots |

Best fit: home lab owners who want one box for storage, containers, media and a few AI services. That is where the Lockerstor 8 Gen3 (AS6808T) scores highest (Home Lab 54/100), followed by Business (51/100).
Less suited to buyers who expect to add a graphics card later.
