What can you expect from an AI NAS under £1,000?

At this price, the strongest systems combine a modern Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processor with a memory ceiling of 32GB to 64GB, four to eight bays and 2.5GbE or 10GbE networking. They run Ollama and Open WebUI in Docker and handle 8B to 14B class models on the CPU once you add memory (Estimated). Few include an NPU or a full GPU slot.

Photo recognition, smart search and backups all work well at this level. The compromise is speed on larger language models.

Where is the money best spent?

Memory headroom. A system that ships with 8GB but accepts 64GB is a better long-term buy than one with a fixed 16GB, because memory decides which models you can run. Budget for a memory upgrade on day one.

10GbE if you move large files. Several systems under £1,000 include at least one 10GbE port, which also makes copying model files quicker.

The manufacturer's AI software. UGREEN, QNAP and ASUSTOR document Ollama officially, which makes setup easier than a community guide.
