Do you need a GPU in an AI NAS?

Updated

The short answer

Not to get started. A modern AI NAS runs 8B class models on its processor at a usable pace. You need a GPU if you want 14B models or larger to answer quickly, want several people to use it at once, or plan to generate images.

What can a NAS do without a GPU?

Quite a lot. Photo recognition, document indexing, transcription with smaller models and a private assistant using 8B class models all run on a modern AI NAS processor. Systems with strong integrated graphics, such as Intel Arc or AMD Radeon 890M, help with supported runtimes.

When does a GPU become worth it?

  • You use 14B to 32B models every day and want quick answers
  • Several people will use the assistant at once
  • You want image generation or heavier video AI
  • You plan to run a team document search with a large answering model

In each case, a graphics card with its own memory runs the model many times faster than the CPU.

How much GPU memory do you need?

Match it to the models (Estimated):

GPU memoryModels that run fully on the card
8GB7B to 8B at 4-bit
12GB to 16GBUp to 14B at 4-bit
24GBUp to 32B at 4-bit
48GB or more70B at 4-bit

If a model is bigger than the card, Ollama splits it between the GPU and system memory, which works but loses much of the speed.

What about power and heat?

A graphics card can draw more power than the rest of the NAS combined. Check the NAS power supply and its stated GPU budget: the NIMO Nexus Pro reserves 400W for a card, while many desktop NAS units with small slots support only low-power cards. Expect more fan noise under load, so place a GPU-equipped NAS somewhere noise does not matter.

Which NAS systems can take a GPU?

Only those with a PCIe slot or an OCuLink port. Full-size slots, such as on QNAP's h1290FX servers and the NIMO Nexus Pro, take large cards. UGREEN's iDX range has a PCIe x8 slot. The Minisforum N5 and N5 Pro use OCuLink for an external dock. Check card size, power and the vendor's compatibility list before buying.

Common questions

Will a gaming GPU work?

Usually, if it fits and the NAS can power it. NVIDIA cards have the broadest support in AI tools.

Can I add a GPU to any NAS?

No. Most storage NAS units have no slot, or only a small x2 or x4 slot meant for network cards.

Yes, on systems with an OCuLink port, such as some Minisforum models. You need an external dock with its own power supply, and driver support depends on the operating system, so check the maker's documentation first.

Does a GPU help with photo and video tasks?

Yes. Besides language models, a GPU can speed up media transcoding and some photo recognition, depending on the apps you use. Integrated graphics already handle most transcoding well, so a card mainly pays off for AI.

Do NAS operating systems support NVIDIA drivers?

Some do. QNAP supports selected NVIDIA cards for container workloads, and open systems such as TrueNAS or Unraid installed on a Minisforum box can use them too. Check the vendor's compatibility list before buying a card.
