How much network traffic does local AI create?
Very little while chatting. A question and an answer are a few kilobytes, so even 1GbE is plenty for a private assistant. The AI work happens inside the NAS.
When does network speed matter?
- Model files. Models range from a few gigabytes to over 40GB. Downloading them happens over your internet connection, but copying or backing them up between machines is faster on 10GbE.
- RAG indexing. If documents arrive from other computers, a large library copies in far less time.
- Creative work. Editing video stored on the NAS needs 10GbE or Thunderbolt for smooth playback.
- Teams. Several people moving files while others use AI tools share the same link.
- Remote GPU. If the NAS sends work to a separate GPU machine, a fast link keeps it responsive.
What do the speeds mean in practice?
| Link | Approximate transfer rate | Time to copy 40GB |
|---|---|---|
| 1GbE | About 110MB/s | About 6 minutes |
| 2.5GbE | About 280MB/s | About 2.5 minutes |
| 10GbE | About 1,100MB/s | Under a minute |
Real speeds also depend on drives, so 10GbE suits SSD or flash storage best.
What else do you need for 10GbE?
A 10GbE switch or a 10GbE port on the computer you copy from, suitable cabling (Cat6a for 10GBASE-T over longer runs), and storage fast enough to keep up. A single hard drive cannot fill a 10GbE link; several drives in RAID or SSDs can. Without those, a 10GbE port on the NAS gives little benefit.
Which AI NAS systems include 10GbE?
Many current AI NAS systems include at least one 10GbE port: UGREEN's iDX6011 range and DXP8800 Plus and DXP6800 Pro have two, the Minisforum N5 and N5 Pro have one alongside 5GbE, and ASUSTOR's Gen3 models have two. QNAP's h1290FX servers go to 25GbE. The table on this page lists them from live records.
Common questions
Do I need a 10GbE switch?
To get 10GbE speeds to other machines, yes, or a direct cable to one computer. Otherwise the NAS runs at the speed of its slowest link.
Is 2.5GbE enough for a home AI NAS?
For most households, yes.
Does 10GbE make AI answers faster?
No. Answers are generated inside the NAS and sent as short text, so even a slow network keeps up. Network speed matters for copying models, video files and backups, not for chatting with a model.
Can I add 10GbE later?
On systems with a free PCIe slot, yes, with a network card. Systems without a slot can sometimes use a USB or Thunderbolt adapter where the operating system supports one, but speeds and support vary, so check before buying.
What cabling does 10GbE need?
Copper 10GbE runs over Cat6a cable for full distance and Cat6 for shorter runs. SFP+ ports use fibre or short direct-attach cables. Check which type your NAS and switch use before buying cables.
