What do you need for ai search on a NAS?
AI search lets you find files by describing what is in them, such as a photo of a red car or a contract mentioning a deadline, rather than remembering file names. Several AI NAS systems build it in; others can add it with document tools in Docker.
What counts as AI search?
Three things are usually meant. Semantic file search understands the meaning of a query and matches documents that never use the exact words. Image search finds photos by their content. Transcript search finds spoken words inside audio and video. All three need the NAS to index files with AI models first.
What does AI search need from the hardware?

Indexing a large library is the heavy part. It runs in the background after setup and then keeps up with new files.
Which vendors include it?
UGREEN builds Universal Search with semantic matching into UGOS Pro on iDX systems. Zettlab's ZettOS offers natural language search across documents, images and audio. StationPC lists semantic and OCR search on the DA400. QNAP's Qsirch adds an AI mode on models with a supported GPU. Synology's GPU-based AI search runs only on a few models outside our current tracking, and TerraMaster's AI agent relies on a cloud API key.
Can you add it to any NAS?
On x86 systems with Docker, yes, with tools such as AnythingLLM or Open WebUI for documents. It takes more setup than a built-in feature and works best with 32GB or more of memory.
Common questions
Does AI search work on photos?
Yes. Most vendors already index faces, objects and scenes in their photo apps; AI search extends that to free-text descriptions.
Is my data sent anywhere?
Not with on-device search. Check settings for any cloud model options and leave them off if privacy matters.
