AI photo recognition on a NAS
Updated
What do you need for ai photos on a NAS?
Every NAS brand we track can sort photos by faces and objects on the device, without a cloud service. Faster processors, NPUs and more memory make the first scan of a large library much quicker and enable search by description on newer AI NAS systems.
What does AI photo recognition do?
It groups photos by the people in them, recognises objects, pets and scenes, reads text in images, and on newer systems lets you search by description. The work happens on the NAS: your photos never leave the house.
What does it need from the hardware?
| Requirement | Minimum | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4GB for object recognition on most systems | 8GB to 16GB for large libraries |
| Processor | Any current x86 or vendor ARM chip with an NPU | Modern x86 with good integrated graphics |
| Accelerator | Optional | NPU or GPU used by the photo app |
| Storage | Enough bays for your library | M.2 slot for thumbnails and the index |
Synology notes that object recognition in Photos needs 4GB of memory or more.
How do the vendors compare?
Synology Photos, QNAP's QuMagie, UGREEN's AI album, ASUSTOR's Photo Gallery and TerraMaster's Photos all offer face and object recognition. QNAP's TS-233 uses a small built-in NPU to speed it up, and its higher models support accelerator cards. UGREEN's iDX range and Zettlab's systems add search by description and text recognition. The ranking below favours systems with stronger compute and storage for big libraries.
How long does the first scan take?
It depends on the library size and the processor. Tens of thousands of photos can take hours to days on a low-power NAS and much less on a modern AI NAS. After the first scan, new photos are processed as they arrive.
Common questions
Do I need an AI NAS for photo recognition?
No. Most current NAS units do it. An AI NAS makes it faster and adds better search.
Does it work with phone backups?
Yes. Every vendor's mobile app backs up photos to the NAS, where they are recognised automatically.
Which AI NAS systems suit ai photos best?
19 systems score 40 or more for this workload; the top 8 are shown, ranked by their AI photos score.
